The controls just feel different because the game is still new to you, you will adapt with practice & patience (this is true of all games). In time I think you might learn to appreciate that the combat is one of the strong points of the game, partly because it does take time to master.

You probably would have put half the time you did into the game if the controls were more fluid and responsive.
I was loving the game early on, but put it away once I began encountering chompers at every step, and the mobs that attacked my hideout at night really exemplified how the controls are not suited for close-quarters melee. In this case, I was just wanting to clear the backlog and get to the ending only because the gameplay is awful, but even with cheats on I still didn't feel like slogging through it and just watching the ending on YouTube.
